From diapers to 6,000 baby pacifiers: German truck with tools for Greece

Medium-sized companies from the Rhine-Main area are involved with Wings of Help / Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen e.V. for the Camp Skaramagas near Athens
Support for people in need in Greece has developed into a long-term project for Wings of Help / Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen e.V. In the past five years, the Frankfurt aid organization has sent 15 trucks with urgently needed aids to Greece, either for Greek families in need or refugees in camps on the mainland and the islands of Greece.
At the end of February 2020, a large lorry from Germany reached the Camp Skaramagas in the port region west of the capital Athens for the first time. Around 3,000 migrants, mainly from Syria, are accommodated there, especially mothers with their children. Wings of Help received a call for help from the Greek partner organization “The Smile of the Child” that in the Skaramagas camp especially small children urgently need support. A 40-ton truck now brought 6,000 baby pacifiers, baby drinking bottles, children food, diapers, children’s toothpaste and toothbrushes, as well as warm underwear from Germany to Athens. The relief goods were handed over to the needy in the presence of a team from Wings of Help / Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen e. V.
According to the latest surveys, over 100,000 refugees live in Greece, more than 60 percent refugees of the Syrien war. Half of them live in camps on four Greek islands, whilst it usually takes three to four years to decide on asylum in the EU. The government in Athens is currently trying to ease the situation in the completely overcrowded camps on the islands by moving migrants to other camps on the mainland. The current aid for refugees was initiated together with more than a dozen medium-sized companies in the Rhine-Main area, especially in the Mainz region.
