Commemoration of the genocide of the Yazidis

Liberation ten years ago – Celebration in Stuttgart – Rapid aid from LOG/WoH by wide-bodied aircraft to the north of Iraq

For Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help (LOG/WoH), the tenth anniversary of the Yazidi genocide was a very special day: at a commemoration ceremony in Stuttgart, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and human rights activist Nadia Murad and Baden-Württemberg’s Minister President Winfrid Kretschmann unveiled a sculpture that will be traveling through Europe in the coming months. Together with a documentary, this exhibition commemorates the murder, expulsion and violence against the Yazidi people in the northern Iraqi Sinjar Mountains where over 10,000 people fell victim to the IS terror militia. Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad thanked the state of Baden-Württemberg for its special reception program for Yazidi refugees since 2014/2015.

At the time, LOG/WoH quickly recognized the great need of the people in the Sinjar Mountains and immediately after the liberation of the Yazidis, who had been defenseless against IS attacks for months, organized a wide-bodied aircraft full of relief supplies to Erbil Airport in northern Kurdistan. Just a few hours later, six 40-ton articulated lorries loaded with urgently needed relief supplies set off from Erbil Airport towards the Sinjar Mountains. At the exhibition opening in Stuttgart, Nadia Murad also thanked LOG/WoH President Frank Franke and Board Member Marie-Luise Thüne once again for the rapid and unprecedented relief operation for her traumatized people. LOG/WoH continues to support the Yazidis today, who are housed in refugee camps in northern Iraq.
